This year, on March 13-14, Jewish communities across Europe will celebrate Purim, a holiday that carries powerful messages of resilience, solidarity, and joy. Based on ancient Persian history, the story of Purim recounts how Queen Esther and her uncle Mordecai thwarted the plans of Royal Vizier Haman to annihilate the Jewish people. Purim offers universal lessons on standing up to oppression and fostering communal support, values that are deeply relevant to contemporary European society.
A Time for Celebration
Purim is a festive holiday, a time to give and share. The holiday’s customs—dressing in costume, exchanging food and drink, and reading the Book of Esther—remind us of the strength found in collective joy and cultural expression. In a Europe that thrives on diversity, Purim’s celebratory nature highlights the importance of embracing different identities while finding unity in shared traditions.
Strength in Solidarity
One of the core values of Purim is matanot la’evyonim—giving to those in need. This principle transcends religious boundaries, encouraging social responsibility and compassion. In an era where economic disparities and social challenges persist across Europe, the Purim tradition of charity serves as a reminder that societies flourish when they prioritise care for the vulnerable.
Looking Ahead
Purim teaches that joy, resilience, and solidarity are powerful forces for building strong communities. By celebrating together, giving to those in need, and standing up against injustice, we reaffirm our commitment to a more inclusive and united Europe.
Happy Purim!
